The account of what took place on the occasion of that morning walk, engaged in by Captain Gordon and Father Matthias, reached me with all precision of detail. My friend was full of what had happened, and ready enough to speak of his conversation with the priest. That conversav tion, it seemed, had placed matters in an entirely new light. His reverence had begun by confining his discourse entirely to unimportant matters--the beauty of the morning, of the scenery, the admirable sport which was to be had in the neighbourhood. His profession debarred him from engaging in such amusements, but he could take an interest in them nevertheless. Nay, he even went so far as to own, with an enchanting frankness, that, having entered on his sacred function comparatively late in life, he had had certain opportunities of tasting the pleasures over which the goddess Diana is said to preside, and had known what it was to bring down a pheasant on the wing, and even to assistso far as his presence went--at the demolition of a fox. Now, walking quite carelessly, and professing to be indifferent as to what direction they should take, our ingenuous friend had managed that all this time he and his companion should direct theirsteps towards that mysterious enclosure which popularly went by the name of the Lady's Wood, and it was not very long before they arrived at one of the entrances to the enchanted ground--at those very iron gates, in fact, through which I had held converse with the Lily of Strathcairn.
